The COSS course is intended for candidates who wish to set up a safe system of work on Network Rail’s infrastructure and act as a Controller Of Site Safety. It also covers Personal Track Safety re-certification.

  • This course is designed to give you the knowledge and training to provide protection to groups of people who work on or near the track.
  • By the end of the course you’ll be able to carry out the duties of the COSS to a competent level. You must also be able to accept OLP and CRP Documentation and accept Line clear Verification documents.
  • You will also be able to test the conductor rail using a Live Line tester.

Who The COSS Training Suitable For?

Anyone aged 18 or over that is required to protect a group working on or near the line.

Railway Group Standard GO/RT 3358 (Persons Responsible for Protecting Work On or Near the Line) requires employers to select delegates for this role based on documented processes to assess aptitude and prior experience. A Controller of Site Safety may carry out IWA duties without further training.

COSS Course Objectives

On successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate your ability to correctly interpret relevant parts of the Rule Book and relevant Railway Group Standards when acting as a COSS.
  • demonstrate your understanding and ability to set up a Safe System of Work before any group of staff is allowed to go on or near the line.

COSS Training Requirements

For our COSS Training, you must be 16 and bring along valid ID (Passport, Driving license or ID card) and 2 Passport size pictures. Proof of address and National Insurance will also be required.

You will need to already have a valid Sentinel Card with the relevant medical and D&A assessments.

A valid COSS Rule Book is also required for Controller of Site Safety duties and a Log Book with 4 endorsed entries.

 

Controller Of Site Safety Course Availability

A COSS Course will be scheduled upon receiving the Maximum 8 learners per session.

They run every week so book in advance to avoid any disappointment.
