Paediatric First Aid Course

The HABC Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF) accredited qualification provides theoretical and practical training in first aid techniques that are specific to infants aged under 1, and children aged from 1 year old to the onset of puberty. Learners will become familiar with the role of the pediatric first aid staff and be able to assess and react appropriately to an emergency situation, such as a child or an infant who is unresponsive, has an airway obstruction, has breathing difficulties or is suffering from shock or anaphylaxis.

 

Who are this paediatric first aid courses qualification for ?

This qualification is aimed at individuals wishing to become a paediatric first aid staff in the workplace. They will be responsible for the welfare of infants and children. This qualification is intended for learners already working or preparing to work in the industry. It meets the requirements for pediatric first aid outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage is a document published by The Department for Education and applies to Early Years childcare. The Statutory Framework states that ‘at least one person who has a current paediatric first aid certificate must be on the premises at all times when children are present. There must be at least one person on outings who has a current paediatric first aid certificate.’ This Paediatric First Aid Course is recognized as a qualification that fulfills this need.t covers a wide range of topics and expands on the 1-day course by going into depth on each subject. No previous First Aid experience is necessary to join this course.

 

How long will it take?

To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake 16 hours of learning.  The minimum contact time, excluding breaks, of 12 hours over 2 days.

 

Topics covered

Topics include the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first-aid staff. It also includes providing first aid for an infant or a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally. The qualification also covers how to administer first aid to an infant or a child with head and spinal injuries. It covers administering first aid for a child who is choking or suffering from anaphylaxis.
How to deal with an Emergency, Infection Control Measures, The Primary & Secondary Surveys, Causes of Unconsciousness, CPR, Choking Procedures, Prevention & Control of Shock, Bleeding/Wound Management, Burns Procedures, The Importance and Completion of Accident Reports and RIDDOR Forms, Child specific first aid conditions.

 

Areas we cover

We cover the whole Essex area which includes Barking, Dagenham, Romford, Chadwell Heath, Basildon, Southend, Brentwood, Billericay, Ilford, Grays and Thurrock. We also cover all areas of London which includes but not limited to Harrow, Uxbridge, Ealing, Hounslow and Knightsbridge. Same applies to West End, Wood Green, Stratford, East Ham, Bromley, Plaistow, Barking and West Ham etc.

 

Assessment method

Learners must undertake a practical assessment of their competence along with a short open response knowledge assessment.

 

This qualification lasts for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course.

 

Learners achieving this qualification may also go on to take other specialist first aid qualifications, such as:

HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF);
HABC Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF);
