Working on the railway
Working on the railway
The UK government is investing billions on railway infrastructure with new initiatives like Cross-rail and HS2 coupled with station upgrades on London Underground and Network Rail. There has never been a better time to consider a career to work on the railways.
The first step to working on railways
Our Railway Training Courses provide companies and individual contractors with the skills, knowledge and certification to work on the railways. It also ensure that rail works are carried out efficiently and safely as well as full compliance with Network Rail Group Standards.
To work on the railways, the starting point is to go to a railway principal contractor, sub-contractor or rail recruitment agency and apply for a job, the company then becomes your primary sponsor. Without a Sentinel sponsorship, you cannot work on the railways. It is after sponsorship that you can be sent to a Network rail assessment centre for a rail sentinel card test in other to obtain a rail sentinel card.
Your sponsor will then arrange your initial which includes your ICI e learning and the industry common induction assessment – ICI training. The ICI e learning can be done at home or at the training centre while the industry common induction must be done at an approved network rail assessment centre. There are two different types of industry common induction. The ICI lu course and the ICI network rail course. You may choose to do the ICI network rail or with London Underground endorsement – ICI lu course or both – depending on the contracts or projects your railway company do have available.
Who needs what to work on the railways?
If you are a cleaner, security guard, office staff, station staff or someone who do not want to go into the safety part of rail works and will not work on or close to the track, the combination of ICI e learning and the Industry Common Induction for Network Rail – network rail ICI or with London Underground endorsement – ICI lu course or both may be all you need to pass your railsentinel card test and obtain the ICI card. If you are an engineer, architect, surveyor, safety staff, tradesman, track labourer or you may work near or close to the track, you may have to go a bit further and do a personal track safety course PTS course and track induction course.
For safety critical works, further courses like Controller of site safety COSS course, Lookout course will be required.
